Alexander, the King of Macedonia and one of the greatest army leaders in the history of warfare, conquers much of the known world.
'Alexander' traces the short, but adventurous life of the Macedonian conqueror, Alexander the Great (356-323 B.C.), who conquered almost the entire known world of his era. From his childhood as the son of King Philip, to acending the thrown at age 20 in 336 B.C. upon his father's murder, and starting in 334 B.C., Alexander crossed into Asia on his 11-year conquest of the known world. From his conquests of Egypt, to battles with the Persians and the capture of Babylon, operations near Maracanda and in Afghanistan, and pushing all the way to India where he reigned unchallenged before his sudden death at age 32. Though Alexander made use of the well-oiled army created by his father, he pushed the limits of Macedonian & Greek power to levels King Philip could not have dreamed of.
I have to say I was eager to see this movie. Expectations were high and maybe that enhances all the critic&#39;s voices, including my own. Anyway, Alexander sucks! And it sucks big time.<br/><br/>First of all, I&#39;ve been a fan of Alexander for as long as I can remember. It simply blows me away that one single person could create such an enormous empire in just a few years. This movie portraits the quest correctly, but it misses key points, specially when it comes to Alex&#39;s character. Yes, Alexander was bisexual and possibly even more gay than straight, but it was custom at the time to have an homosexual relationship with a servant or a friend. Actually, if you occupied a strong &quot;political&quot; position this was somehow expected (almost demanded). Alexander was a ruthless enemy and a man of extremely strong character. Sure he had feelings like anyone else, but the film exaggerates when we see an Alexander being constantly overwhelmed by them. Also, Collin Farrel as a great conqueror? Come on, I like Farrel, but it&#39;s just not in him (at least not yet).<br/><br/>The momentum of the movie is just slow, like, turtle slow. Things don&#39;t happen quite as fast as they should. Alexander&#39;s life was fast! He lived short, fought hard and died great. Same thing should happen with the movie. Instead we are carried over through 3 hours of soap opera. Not acceptable.<br/><br/>Bottomline, Alexander sucks! I doesn&#39;t deserve being branded as epic… not even as great and I&#39;m sad to say this, it deserves a spot in the top bottom.
This is a movie I really looked forward to seeing but it turned out to be a great disappointment and I switched it off with half an hour to go.<br/><br/>Although the action scenes were brilliantly executed and presented, I found the many flash-backs to Alexander&#39;s childhood were extremely boring and that they made the story hard to follow.<br/><br/>I looked forward to action on a grand scale and that part didn&#39;t disappoint me. However, the flash-backs made the movie disjointed and ruined the illusion for me.<br/><br/>A great story ruined by the director.
As one of the few movies around not pushing state-of-the-art animation or Jude Law, Alexander is a damn good date movie.
Apart from Bagaos the Final Cut merely offers more detailed characterizations, deepening of the characters relations to each other and short impressions of Alexanders life often only as a commentary from the Off by Ptolemaios. On top of that, a healthy dozen of violent scenes have been re-integrated into the battle scenes that presumably had to to be cut for the Theatrical release, for they are a good deal more brutal than we are used from the rest of the film.The most obvious change is again the structure of the movie. The battle of Gaugamela has been moved towards the beginning again (as planned in an early version of the script) and is seen even before Alexanders childhood and adolescence. The events in Bactria have been reassembled as well. First we see the wedding with Roxane, then the movie jumps back to the discussion with the generals and the celebration before that where Alexander meets and falls in love with Roxane before the movie jumps back to the wedding night. All other changes from the DC are present in the FC as well. Again one can find a very detailed comparison between the Theatrical Version and the Final Cut with pictures here.<br/><br/>In 2014 there is one more cut called the Ultimate Cut that will run 207 minutes.
